Q: What are the obvious drawbacks of onion dryers in terms of process control?
Answer: Onion dryers have extremely strict requirements for temperature, humidity, and dehumidification speed control. Onions have a high water content and are rich in sugar. If the temperature is set too high (over 50 ℃) or the drying speed is too fast, it can easily damage the nutrients such as sulfides inside onions, resulting in poor rehydration; Meanwhile, excessive drying can also easily lead to phenomena such as bulb withering and cracking. In addition, the entire drying cycle is relatively long (usually around 15 hours), making it impossible to achieve rapid dehydration like microwave drying, which has a certain impact on production scheduling.
2. Question: What are the shortcomings of onion dryers in terms of equipment investment and operating costs?
Answer: The initial investment cost of onion dryer is relatively high. The price difference is significant depending on the type and scale of the equipment. For example, a small heat pump drying room costs about 5000-10000 US dollars, while the investment for industrial grade continuous mesh belt or tunnel drying machines can be as high as 15000 to 30000 US dollars or more. At the same time, the drying process requires continuous consumption of electricity or heat energy, and the energy consumption cost accounts for a relatively high proportion of the overall processing cost (electricity may account for about 30%), which is a significant operational burden for small processing plants or startups.
3. Question: What are the pain points in daily operation and maintenance of onion dryers?
Answer: The operation of onion dryer has a certain technical threshold, requiring operators to proficiently master the temperature and humidity curves at different stages (such as 60 ℃ dehumidification in the early stage and 80 ℃ color setting in the later stage), and strictly control the thickness of the material (such as no more than 5cm per layer for mesh belt type) and the frequency of flipping. Otherwise, it is prone to local over drying or uneven drying problems. In addition, some models (such as box type assembly lines) have a large footprint, bulky equipment, and require regular cleaning and maintenance of the internal hot air circulation system and dehumidification system, which puts high demands on the site conditions and personnel maintenance capabilities of the factory.
