Four drawbacks of freeze-drying pet feed
1. High production costs and expensive terminal prices
The freeze-drying process requires specialized low-temperature vacuum equipment, and the production process has extremely strict maintenance standards for sterile and dust-free workshops. Due to the high energy consumption and complex process links of the equipment, its overall production cost remains high. Compared to conventional puffed dry grains or low-temperature baked grains, freeze-dried feed has a higher market price, and long-term feeding as a staple food will significantly increase the economic expenses of household pet ownership.
2. There is a potential risk of residual pathogens
Low temperature freeze-drying dehydration can only significantly reduce and inhibit the activity of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and parasites in the food materials, but it can not completely disinfection and sterilization and clear. Even if some legitimate brands add secondary sterilization processes such as high-pressure pasteurization, it is difficult to completely eradicate the source of disease. If the quarantine and quality control of fresh raw materials are not strict in the early stage, residual pathogenic bacteria (such as Salmonella) are highly likely to cause gastrointestinal infections in pets, which is also the core cause of frequent batch safety recalls of freeze-dried food.
3. Nutrient ratio is prone to imbalance, and single feeding poses hidden dangers
Some niche or low-priced freeze-dried products on the market do not strictly benchmark authoritative pet dietary preparation standards, often only focusing on protein and fat content, while ignoring the scientific ratio of vitamins, essential amino acids, trace minerals, and dietary fiber. In addition, freeze-dried food itself lacks moisture. If pets do not have additional water sources to replenish after consumption, it is easy to cause urine concentration. Long term feeding of such non-standard products alone may lead to problems such as nutritional deficiency, urinary system stones, or weakened immunity in pets.
4. Indirectly endangering the health of the owner, with a high risk of cross infection
As food borne pathogens may remain in the freeze-dried feed, the breeders may still be directly exposed to the bacteria in the whole process of sub packaging, grasping and feeding, even if they have done a good job in hand cleaning and tableware disinfection and sterilization. At the same time, pets who accidentally consume contaminated feed can excrete harmful bacteria through their feces, which can easily lead to cross infection between humans and animals in a closed home environment, posing a health threat to the elderly, children, and physically weak individuals in the household.
